OverheatingMediumMacBook overheating
What this error means
This means your MacBook is running hotter than normal and macOS is trying to protect the hardware. It can happen during heavy work, while charging, after a system update, or if airflow is blocked.
You may notice loud fans, a warm case, slower performance, or apps becoming less responsive.
Common causes
- 1Too many demanding apps open at once
- 2Blocked vents or poor airflow around the MacBook
- 3Dust buildup inside the device
- 4A background process or update using high CPU
- 5Battery or charging-related heat
- 6Outdated macOS or app software
How to fix it
- Give the MacBook a break and improve airflow. Move it to a hard, flat surface, unplug any case or cover that traps heat, and make sure the vents are not blocked. If it feels very hot, shut it down for a few minutes before using it again.
- Close apps that are using a lot of power. Open Activity Monitor and look for apps or processes with very high CPU use. Quit anything you do not need right now, especially video calls, games, photo editors, and browser tabs you are not using.
- Restart the MacBook. A restart can stop a stuck process that is keeping the system busy and generating extra heat.
- Check for macOS updates. Install any available updates, then restart again. Updates often fix background issues that can cause unusual heat or fan activity.
- Remove extra load while charging. If the MacBook overheats mainly when plugged in, use the original power adapter if possible, avoid charging on soft surfaces, and do not run heavy apps at the same time.
- Run a Quickfix scan after the Mac has cooled down. Let the device return to a normal temperature first, then scan for software issues that may be causing repeated overheating, such as runaway processes or update problems.
- Get it checked if the heat keeps coming back. If the MacBook still overheats during normal use, there may be dust inside, a fan problem, or a battery issue that needs service.
Recommended fixes
Run a Quickfix scan
- Open Quickfix AI and click Start scan.
- Choose the Quick or Advanced profile and let the scan finish.
- Review the highlighted issues and apply the recommended fixes.
Restart your device
A restart clears temporary state that often causes transient errors.
- Save your work and close open apps.
- Restart the device from the power menu.
- Reproduce the issue to check whether it persists.
Install macOS updates
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available updates.
- Restart if prompted.
Close resource-heavy apps
- On Windows open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc); on macOS open Activity Monitor.
- Sort by CPU or memory usage.
- Quit apps you don't need that are using excessive resources.

When to seek help
Seek professional help if your MacBook shuts down from heat repeatedly, the fans stay loud all the time, the battery swells, you smell burning, or the device becomes too hot to hold comfortably. Also get help if overheating continues after restarting, updating macOS, and reducing app usage, because that can point to a hardware issue.
