Process system isn't respondingMediumProcess system isn't responding
What this error means
This message means Android’s system process has stopped responding, so the phone may freeze, slow down, or stop letting you switch apps normally. It often appears after heavy app use, a software update, low storage, or when the system is under memory pressure.
Common causes
- 1An app is using too much memory or freezing the system
- 2Android needs a restart after an update or long uptime
- 3The device is low on storage or running too many background apps
- 4A recent app, cache problem, or software bug is affecting the system
How to fix it
- Restart your phone. If the screen is still responsive, power the device off and turn it back on. This clears temporary system issues that can trigger the message.
- Close apps you are not using. If the phone is sluggish, switch out of games, video apps, or other heavy apps and close them from the recent apps screen.
- Free up storage space. Remove unused apps, large downloads, and old media if your storage is nearly full. Android needs free space to keep system processes running smoothly.
- Update Android. Open your phone’s settings and install any available system update. A bug in the current version can cause the system process to stop responding.
- Restart in Safe Mode and test the phone. Safe Mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the problem stops there, a recently installed app is likely the cause.
- Remove or update recent apps if Safe Mode helps. Uninstall one recently added app at a time, or update the app if an update is available, then check whether the message returns.
- If the issue keeps happening, contact support or service. Repeated freezes, boot loops, or crashes after a reset can point to a deeper software problem or failing hardware.
Recommended fixes
Restart your device
A restart clears temporary state that often causes transient errors.
- Save your work and close open apps.
- Restart the device from the power menu.
- Reproduce the issue to check whether it persists.
Update Android
- Open Settings > System > System update (wording varies by brand).
- Install any available update.
- Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charged during the update.
Close resource-heavy apps
- On Windows open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc); on macOS open Activity Monitor.
- Sort by CPU or memory usage.
- Quit apps you don't need that are using excessive resources.
Boot Android into Safe Mode
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Touch and hold Power off until Safe mode appears, then confirm.
- If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the likely cause — uninstall recently added apps.
Free up disk space
- Empty the Recycle Bin / Trash.
- Remove large files and apps you no longer use.
- Aim to keep at least 10% of the drive free.

When to seek help
Seek professional help if the message appears every day, the phone keeps freezing even after restarting, or it starts happening during startup and you cannot reach the home screen reliably. You should also get help sooner if the device becomes very hot, the battery drains unusually fast, or the phone no longer responds to touches, because those signs can indicate a broader system or hardware issue.
