Safari not workingMediumSafari not working on macOS
What this error means
Safari may stop opening pages, freeze, crash, or show a blank screen on your Mac. This usually happens when the browser itself needs a restart, a website is having trouble, your network connection is unstable, or Safari data such as cached files or extensions is interfering with normal browsing.
Common causes
- 1Safari is temporarily frozen or crashed
- 2A network or Wi‑Fi problem is preventing pages from loading
- 3A browser extension, cache, or website data is causing conflicts
- 4macOS or Safari needs an update
- 5Low disk space or another app is slowing the Mac down
How to fix it
- Quit Safari completely, then open it again. If Safari is frozen, press
Command+Option+Escape, choose Safari, and click Force Quit. Then reopen Safari and try the page again. - Check whether the problem is only one website. Try opening a few different sites. If only one site fails, the issue may be with that site rather than Safari.
- Check your internet connection. Make sure other apps can go online. If Wi‑Fi seems unstable, turn Wi‑Fi off and back on, move closer to the router, or reconnect to the network.
- Restart your Mac. A restart clears temporary glitches that can keep Safari from loading pages or responding properly.
- Remove Safari extensions that may be causing conflicts. In Safari, open the settings or preferences area, look for extensions, and turn off anything you do not recognize or do not need. Then test Safari again.
- Clear website data if Safari still misbehaves. Remove recent browsing data, cached files, or website data for the site that is failing. This can fix pages that keep crashing or loading incorrectly.
- Install any available macOS updates. Updating macOS can fix Safari bugs and compatibility issues. After the update, test Safari again.
Recommended fixes
Restart your device
A restart clears temporary state that often causes transient errors.
- Save your work and close open apps.
- Restart the device from the power menu.
- Reproduce the issue to check whether it persists.
Install macOS updates
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available updates.
- Restart if prompted.
Close resource-heavy apps
- On Windows open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc); on macOS open Activity Monitor.
- Sort by CPU or memory usage.
- Quit apps you don't need that are using excessive resources.
Check your network connection
- Confirm other devices can reach the internet.
- Toggle Wi-Fi off and back on.
- Move closer to the router, or switch to a wired connection to rule out signal issues.
Free up disk space
- Empty the Recycle Bin / Trash.
- Remove large files and apps you no longer use.
- Aim to keep at least 10% of the drive free.

When to seek help
Get help if Safari still will not open after a restart, if it crashes every time you launch it, or if the problem affects all websites even after checking your connection and removing extensions. You should also seek help if your Mac is extremely slow, storage is full, or other apps are failing too, because the issue may be with the system rather than Safari alone.
