Not chargingMediumMacBook won't charge
What this error means
This means your MacBook is not receiving power from the charger, or macOS is not detecting that it should charge the battery. You may see the battery percentage stay the same, a “not charging” message, or no charging indicator at all when the cable is plugged in.
It often happens after using the wrong adapter, a loose cable connection, a dirty charging port, or a software glitch in macOS.
Common causes
- 1The power adapter, cable, or charger is damaged or not supplying enough power
- 2The charging port has dust, lint, or a loose connection
- 3macOS is temporarily misreporting the battery or charging status
- 4A connected accessory or USB-C hub is interfering with charging
- 5The battery itself is worn out or failing
How to fix it
- Check the charger and cable. Make sure you are using a charger that is meant for your MacBook model. If possible, try a different wall outlet, cable, or power adapter that you know works.
- Inspect and clean the charging port. Look for dust, lint, or debris in the port. If you see anything, gently remove it with a soft, dry brush or a can of compressed air. Do not use metal objects or liquids.
- Disconnect accessories and try again. Unplug hubs, docks, external drives, and any other accessories. Then connect the charger directly to the MacBook and check whether charging starts.
- Restart your Mac. Save your work, restart the computer, and test the charger again. A simple restart can clear temporary battery or power detection problems.
- Update macOS. Open System Settings, check for software updates, and install any available updates. Charging and battery issues are sometimes fixed by Apple in macOS updates.
- Test with another known-good charger if you can. If the MacBook charges with a different adapter or cable, the original charger is likely the problem. If it still does not charge, the battery or charging hardware may need service.
Recommended fixes
Restart your device
A restart clears temporary state that often causes transient errors.

When to seek help
Seek professional help if your MacBook still will not charge after trying another compatible charger, if the battery drains very quickly, if the computer only works when plugged in, or if you notice swelling, unusual heat, or a burning smell. Stop using the charger immediately if anything feels hot, damaged, or unsafe.
If the port is loose, the cable only charges at certain angles, or the battery percentage jumps around unpredictably, the charging hardware or battery may need inspection by Apple or a qualified repair service.
