iPhone UnavailableHighiPhone unavailable
What this error means
iPhone unavailable means your iPhone is locked because too many incorrect passcode attempts were entered. When this happens, the phone temporarily or permanently stops accepting passcode entry until the lockout period ends, or until the device is erased and set up again.
This message usually appears on the lock screen after repeated failed passcode attempts.
Common causes
- 1Too many incorrect passcode attempts
- 2The wrong passcode was entered by someone else
- 3A child or another person repeatedly tried the device
- 4The iPhone has been locked for security protection
How to fix it
- Wait and check whether the screen shows a timer. If it does, do not keep guessing the passcode. More attempts can make the lockout longer.
- If you remember the correct passcode, enter it carefully once the timer ends. Make sure you are using the right passcode and not a previous one.
- If the iPhone says it is unavailable and offers Erase iPhone, use that only if you are sure you can restore your data from iCloud or a computer backup. Erasing the phone removes its contents.
- If you have another Apple device or access to a trusted computer, sign in to your Apple account and use Apple’s recovery options to erase the device remotely, then set it up again.
- After the iPhone is erased, set it up again and restore from your most recent backup if one is available. This is the usual way to regain access after too many failed passcode attempts.
- If you are not sure whether a backup exists, or if the device is supervised by work or school, contact the person or organization that manages it before erasing anything.
Recommended fixes
Force restart your iPhone
A force restart safely reboots a frozen iPhone without erasing data.

- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, then release.
(iPhone 7: hold Volume Down + Side together. iPhone 6s or earlier: hold Home + Side together.)
Restart your device
A restart clears temporary state that often causes transient errors.
- Save your work and close open apps.
- Restart the device from the power menu.
- Reproduce the issue to check whether it persists.
Update iOS
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power during the update.

When to seek help
Seek help if you do not know the passcode, do not have a backup, or the phone belongs to a child, parent, or organization and you are unsure about erasing it. Also get support if the device is disabled again after you think you entered the correct passcode, or if you cannot access your Apple account to complete recovery.
