Keyboard not workingMediumMacbook keyboard not working
What this error means
This alert appears when Quickfix AI detects that your Macbook keyboard is not responding as expected. You may notice that some keys do nothing, the whole keyboard stops typing, or the keyboard works only after a restart or closing certain apps.
It can happen because of a temporary software issue, an accessibility setting, a stuck key, low battery on a wireless keyboard, or a problem with macOS after an update.
Common causes
- 1macOS is temporarily frozen or overwhelmed
- 2A USB, Bluetooth, or built-in keyboard connection issue
- 3Accessibility settings such as Slow Keys or Sticky Keys are enabled
- 4A specific app is interfering with keyboard input
- 5Hardware damage, liquid exposure, or debris under the keys
How to fix it
- Restart your Macbook. Save any work you can, then restart the computer. A temporary system glitch often clears after a restart.
- Check whether the problem affects all typing. Try the keyboard in the login screen, in Notes, or in a simple text field. If only one app is affected, quit and reopen that app.
- Disconnect anything external. Unplug all accessories except power, including USB hubs, external keyboards, and dongles. If you use a Bluetooth keyboard, turn it off and back on, or reconnect it after a short pause.
- Review keyboard accessibility settings. Open System Settings, then Keyboard or Accessibility, and make sure features like Sticky Keys and Slow Keys are turned off unless you intentionally use them.
- Update macOS. Install any available macOS updates. Keyboard issues are sometimes fixed in system updates.
- Start in Safe Mode. Boot your Macbook in Safe Mode and test the keyboard again. If it works there, a startup item, login item, or third-party app is likely causing the problem.
- If the keyboard still does not work, contact Apple or a repair professional. Persistent failure can point to a hardware issue, especially if the keyboard was exposed to liquid, was physically damaged, or several keys stopped working at once.
Recommended fixes
Restart your device
A restart clears temporary state that often causes transient errors.
- Save your work and close open apps.
- Restart the device from the power menu.
- Reproduce the issue to check whether it persists.
Install macOS updates
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available updates.
- Restart if prompted.
Close resource-heavy apps
- On Windows open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc); on macOS open Activity Monitor.
- Sort by CPU or memory usage.
- Quit apps you don't need that are using excessive resources.
Boot into Safe Mode (Mac)
Apple silicon: shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, select your startup disk, then hold Shift and choose Continue in Safe Mode.
Intel: restart and hold Shift until the login window appears.

When to seek help
Seek professional help if the keyboard fails in Safe Mode, only works after repeated restarts, or stops working after liquid exposure, impact, or visible damage. You should also get it checked if a built-in Macbook keyboard is completely unresponsive and an external keyboard works normally, because that often points to a hardware fault.
